Lesson Plan: I Was Wondering About Equality
Great Thinker's Challenge:
Develop a foundational understanding of the concept of “equality” and make personal connections to an equality-related challenge (e.g., selecting a toy or career path based on personal interest) faced by a group within the community. Write a first-person narrative that advocates for a proposed solution or change from the perspective of an individual facing constraints on their choices, due to them being different from others in the same situation.
Learning Objectives:
(Social Studies) Gather and organize information on major challenges facing different groups and communities, and on measures taken to address these challenges.
(Literacy) Generate ideas about a topic using a variety of strategies and resources.
(Literacy) Write a first-person narrative (letter of advocacy, personal account, an op-ed article) about an imagined experience, using age-appropriate vocabulary, sentence structure, and conventions.
(Social-Emotional Learning) Develop skills to recognize emotions in others and relate to their perspectives and experiences with empathy.
Materials/Preparation:
Research materials (printed text and picture resources, online resources or videos, copies of articles from local newspaper archives, etc.)
Examples of letters written (to the editor, to local government or foundations)
Notebooks and pencils
Grade Range: 2-5
