Lesson Plan: I Was Wondering About Style And Beauty
Great Thinker's Challenge:
Make personal connections to beauty and the concept of style in our everyday lives. Investigate different kinds of wearable art and think critically about design in terms of personal expression, function, and what our choices communicate to others. Design and create a piece of wearable art that represents a personal understanding of style. Describe what makes their piece beautiful or functional, or what it communicates to others.
Learning Objectives:
(Visual Arts) Create a three-dimensional work of art that explores the notion of different tastes.
(Character Development) Explore differences of opinion and learn to appreciate diversity of ideas.
(Character Development) Explore and think critically about personal opinions and tastes and develop confidence and vocabulary in communicating one’s own thoughts and feelings.
(Science) Define a simple design problem, need or want that includes criteria for success and constraints on materials and time.
Materials/Preparation:
Poster paper, markers
What’s in Style? Worksheet
Pre-cut strips of cardboard tubing (e.g., from paper towel or wrapping paper rolls) in 1.5” sections, cut open on one side to make the form that is flexible and c-shaped
Assorted found and craft materials (scraps of paper and fabric, buttons, beads, craft wires, magazines or newspapers, stickers, pompoms, ribbons, string, glue or tape, glowsticks)
Scissors and (optional) whole punches
Grade Range: 2-5
