Lesson Plan: Do You See What I See?

Great Thinker’s Challenge:

Build an awareness of perception by considering how different creatures of different sizes (e.g., an ant, a mouse, a human child, an elephant) might perceive the same item. Develop a vocabulary to describe how these creatures might see a simple object (like a flower) and create a visual representation of that object from each creature’s perspective.

Learning Objectives:

  • (Mathematics) Describe the relative locations of objects or people using positional language (e.g., over, under, above, below, in front of, behind)

  • (Mathematics) Compare several objects using non-standard measurable attributes and relative terms (e.g., bigger, smaller, shortest, tallest)

  • (Visual Arts) Use elements of design, including texture (e.g., fuzzy, prickly, bumpy, smooth), and principals of design, including contrast (e.g., large/ small) to create an impression of perspective and proportion.

  • (Literacy) Write short texts using a few simple forms.

Materials/Preparation:

  • Book: Zoom In, Zoom Out

  • An everyday object to that has some interesting textures when examined closely (e.g., a flower or plant, a large leaf, a melon, a fluffy winter scarf)

  • Magnifying Glass or (Optional) Digital camera

  • Paper, markers, crayons
