Lesson Plan: The Stories We Tell

Great Thinker's Challenge:

Get familiar with different media “languages” (e.g., images, sounds, graphics, and words). Think critically about the media we chose to tell a story, how media influence the stories we tell, and who our stories can reach. Tell one story in different ways, using a variety of media, and consider how this story might be told in the future.

Learning Objectives:

  • (Literacy) Identify some media forms and explain how the conventions and techniques associated with them are used to create meaning.

  • (Literacy) Use available technologies to create media texts of different types.

  • (Literacy) Use grade-appropriate conventions, vocabulary, and terminology in oral, visual, and written form.

  • (Visual Arts) Apply the creative process to produce two- and three-dimensional artworks that communicate feelings, ideas, and understanding.

  • (Visual Arts) Identify and describe a variety of visual art forms seen in the home, at school, and in the community.

  • (Drama) Use sound effects or music to create an emotional element (e.g., suspense, joy, surprise, humour) in a media presentation.

Materials/Preparation:

  • Book: Hey, I’m a Story!

  • Class Story Image Cards

  • Paper, markers, crayons

  • (Optional) Laptops, smart tablets, phones, or digital cameras

  • (Optional) Open source or readily-available applications for photo, audio, or video editing

Grade Range: 1-3
