Lesson Plan: The Universe And I

Great Thinker's Challenge:

Think about the word “Universe” and draw a picture of the images and ideas that this word brings to mind. Read about another person’s idea of what this word represents and note the differences or similarities between the two. Consider why people may have particular ideas about the universe and their place in it.

Learning Objectives:

  • (Literacy) Determine and explain the main idea of a text by identifying key points and how they support the main idea.

  • (Literacy) Write a logical explanation that includes descriptive words and supporting details.

  • (Social Studies) Respond to myths and legends from an early civilization.

  • (Social Studies) Identify and describe important values and beliefs in two different civilizations.

  • (Social Studies) Identify and compare the ways in which people in various early civilizations understood the natural world.

Materials/Preparation:

  • The Universe and I worksheet

  • Coloured pencils, markers, etc.

  • Stories, songs, or movies about the universe and creation, from several different civilizations.

Grade Range: 2-5
