Lesson Plan: Homework About Humans

Great Thinker's Challenge:

Think critically about what it means to be “human” by investigating what makes us similar to or different from other animals. Roleplay as a cryptozoological creature (a Yeti) to research and ask questions about human physical, social, and behavioural characteristics. Use graphic organizers and a labelled diagram to “teach” an audience of other cryptozoological creatures (Yeti students) about the humans that live in their environment.

Learning Objectives:

  • (Health and Physical Education) Identify human body parts by name and describe ways in which humans use those body parts to move and interact with our environment.

  • (Science and Technology) Investigate similarities and differences in the characteristics of various animals.

  • (Science and Technology) Investigate the basic needs, characteristics, behaviour, and adaptations of a particular animal.

  • (Literacy) Use appropriate elements (e.g., graphics, legible printing, labelled diagram, captions, varied print size or colour for emphasis) in a published presentation.

  • (Literacy) Write clear, concise instructions, using appropriate language, tone and terminology.
