Lesson Plan: Where Does Knowledge Come From?

Great Thinker's Challenge:

Explore how knowledge and information are acquired, both with and without the five senses. Play with various “mystery” objects and substances and discuss how we turn initial impressions into observations.

Learning Objectives:

  • (Literacy) Use appropriate vocabulary to describe sensory experiences.

  • (Literacy) Make and discuss inferences based on the information available.

  • (Science) Investigate the connection between mind and body, as well as how our senses work.

Materials/Preparation:

  • Where Does Knowledge Come From? worksheet

  • Images of sense organs (eyes, nose, ear, tongue, hand)

  • Sensory stations

  • Covered box with wet spaghetti noodles in it (touch)

  • Audio Recording of a rain stick or drums being used to make rain noises (hearing)

  • Covered box with flowery perfume oil or other scent (smell)

  • Print outs of optical illusions(sight)

  • Small amounts of fruit-flavoured drinks or other juice (taste)

  • Headphones

  • Pencil crayons or other artist materials
