Lesson Plan: I Was Wondering About Science And Truth
Great Thinker's Challenge:
Evaluate the scientific truth of a claim made by a company promoting their product. Formulate a question and hypothesis that can be tested and think critically about the results of the testing to determine the “truth” behind the claim. Consider the application of findings and impact of that application on the natural world.
Learning Objectives:
(Science and Technology) Formulate a clear, specific question that can be investigated using the scientific method.
(Science and Technology) Use scientific inquiry and/or experimentation skills to investigate solids in terms of their capacity for absorption.
(Mathematics) Measure volume using standard units.
(Media Studies) Identify overt and implied messages in simple media texts.
(Media Studies) Express opinions about ideas, issues, and experiences presented in media texts.
(Literacy) Document a procedure and record observations and conclusions using grade-appropriate terminology and conventions relevant to the subject matter.
(Literacy) Use appropriate visual aids to support or enhance a written report.
Materials/Preparation:
Videos: a few different commercials for paper towels (they don’t have to be the same brands as those being tested)
Three different brands of paper towel (without branding or logos on the product itself). It is a good idea to include a “luxury” commercial brand, a brand made from recycled materials, and brand commonly found in institutions that may be of lower quality, but that is inexpensive.
Alternative: To measure more significant volumes of water and absorption, sponges or other absorbent materials may be tested.
Water and medicine droppers with mL measurements (e.g., 2-10ml)
Coloured construction paper
Notebooks or poster paper and pencils or markers to record procedures and findings
Grade Range: 2-5
