Lesson Plan: Argument Vs. Argument

Great Thinker's Challenge:

Learn the difference between arguing as an emotional release, and arguing as a way to communicate ideas and think rationally. Explore the different parts of an argument and by creating your own “puzzle”.

Learning Objectives:

  • Distinguish between emotional language meant to express feelings and logical reasoning supported by evidence. (Literacy)

  • Reflect on one’s own reactions in discussions and identify strategies to shift from emotional reactions to reasoned thinking. (Social-Emotional Learning)

  • Construct a “thinking puzzle” that models how an argument unfolds, including how ideas connect logically. (Social-Emotional Learning)

Materials/Preparation:

  • Tinker Thinkers book

  • Argument Vs. Argument worksheet

  • Index cards or paper cut to a similar size
