Lesson Plan: Question Tree

Great Thinker's Challenge:

Create a “living” list of questions about the environment, to be answered throughout the course of study. Assess questions for depth and complexity, and sort them accordingly on a Question Tree. Use the Question Tree to brainstorm, gather, and document questions as they are raised and addressed.

Learning Objectives:

  • (Literacy) Engage in a collaborative discussion.

  • (Literacy) Formulate clear, concise questions.

  • (Literacy) Evaluate questions for depth and complexity.

  • (Science) Use appropriate vocabulary to express ideas and formulate questions about the natural world.

Materials/Preparation:

  • Question Tree worksheet

  • Large tree trunk with branches, cut out of repurposed cardboard

  • Small, medium, and large sized leaves, cut out of repurposed cardstock (e.g., from a cereal box) or paper from the recycle bin

  • Poster paper

  • Adhesive putty, push pins or paper clips to attach leaves to the tree

Grade Range: 2-5
