What do robots have to do with kids thinking critically and philosophically? More than you think, actually!

Robots are cool and fascinating on their own, right? Learning anything with robots as a theme is a lot of fun. There’s certainly ample material out there, both fictional and nonfictional, to help with this.

But learning about robots also brings up some pretty amazing questions about ourselves, about the way we think, and about our responsibility to others, and to the world around us. These questions might include:

• Can a robot become a human, and can a human become a robot? If either or both are possible, what does that tell us about what it means to be human?

• Do robots actually think and feel? What can we learn about our own thoughts and feelings by studying robots?

• Is art made by robots still art?  Is art better or worse when it involves robots?

• What do we want robots to do for us? What would be helpful, and what would make things more difficult? 

Exploring questions like these has so many benefits for a little thinker, like:

• Becoming better informed about the role technology plays in our lives, and learning to use it to make things better.

• Journeying through history, and understanding how humans hundreds, even thousands of years ago saw technology (and themselves).

• Enjoying the crossover between science and the humanities, and learning to think in a way that makes room for both.

In addition to all of this, kids generally love robots (who could blame them, right?). Why not take something beloved and captivating, and turn it into a learning opportunity?
